I am . . .
. . . a conservationist by training.
In 2007, I earned an M.S. in Sustainable Development and Conservation Biology at the University of Maryland. During graduate school, I helped launch a new NGO, the Human-Wildlife Conflict Collaboration, and I monitored Karner blue butterflies, one of 14 endangered species of butterflies in the United States.
My interest in conservation was piqued as an undergraduate at the University of Chicago while conducting my first research project: an observational study of the Humboldt penguins at Brookfield Zoo, outside Chicago, Illinois.
. . . an event planner.
From organizing the entire scientific program for the Annual Meetings of the Ecological Society of America (Milwaukee '08 and Albuquerque '09) to helping to plan galas for The Nature Conservancy in New York to coordinating an educational outreach event, BirdFest!, at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, DC, I have a sharp eye for detail when managing large projects.

. . . an aspiring writer.
Or at least, I will be taking some classes in nonfiction writing at the University of Washington this year. I'm excited to see how my writing skills develop with a bit of incentive and encouragement.
. . . an adventurer.
I don't so much seek out the risky, adrenaline rush as I am in search of new experiences and sensations. I covet the feelings from summiting a long hill by bike in 1st gear, from carving down a powdery blue square slope by snowboard, and from reaching that elusive runner's high during a race. Other joys I've discovered: Bikram yoga, swing dancing, and carrying on a conversation in Spanish.
I also love traveling. As the daughter of a field biologist, I grew up taking family "vacations" to the Amazon and living in England as an 8-year-old. My parents instilled in me a love and respect for traveling, both within and beyond my country's borders. As an adult, I have become a strong proponent of solo traveling, but that is the subject of a yet-to-be-written essay.
. . . a newcomer to Seattle, but always a Tar Heel at heart.
I'm excited to be in Seattle and am ready to explore from Olympic National Park to Vancouver to the Cascades to Portland. I want to see the orcas, take the ferries, and drink a bit of coffee. But, the first 19 years of my life were spent in the land of Carolina blue, and even though I never developed much interest in sports, I've learned that pride in my hometown of Chapel Hill extends far beyond the success of its favorite basketball team.
